LOS ANGELES (AP) — Seven hundred Marines sent to Los Angeles will leave the city, the Pentagon said Monday. The Marines were sent to the city in June alongside 4,000 National Guard soldiers in response to protests over the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration raids around the city.
The Pentagon pulled back about half of the National Guard troops deployed to Los Angeles, arguing lawlessness from anti-ICE demonstrations subsided.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the removal of half of the 4,000 National Guard troops who had been sent to Los Angeles to protect federal property and personnel during a spate of protests last month,
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is again calling for an end to the “unnecessary deployment” of National Guard troops in the city, as roughly 2,000 remain for what the federal government is calling protection for immigration agents and federal property.
