NHL Game recap for the Carolina Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York New York Rangers game on January 28, 2025. Follow every play as it happens throughout the NHL season on CBS Sports and the CBS Sports app.
The Carolina Hurricanes will look to earn points in a sixth consecutive game as they host the Chicago Blackhawks (16-29-5). The Canes are coming off of a 4-0 shutout victory over the New York Rangers and tonight will also be the first home games for Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall with their new club.
The Carolina Hurricanes had a big shakeup to their roster last night, adding superstar winger Mikko Rantanen and forward Taylor Hall in exchange for Martin Necas and Jack Drury. The two forward made their way to New York today and are in the lineup for the Canes' 7:30 game against the New York Islanders.
The Rangers had just killed a penalty to Ryan Lindgren and Vincent Trocheck, at the end of his shift, found himself on a partial breakaway in the final minute, with Carolina defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere chasing him. Trocheck opted not to shoot, but instead tried to drop a pass to a trailing K’Andre Miller. But the pass didn’t get through.
For one, Brind’Amour is pairing his two best players by putting them on a line together. Aho has led the Hurricanes in scoring in six of the last seven seasons, and Rantanen was a superstar in Colorado, logging more minutes than any forward in the league since the start of the 2021-22 season.
After a whirlwind Friday night (Jan. 24) where the Carolina Hurricanes made their blockbuster trade, they set their sights on their next game. They were set to take on the New York Islanders at UBS Arena for a Metropolitan Division tilt in their 50th game of the 2024-25 season.
In a blockbuster three-way trade, the Hurricanes are going all-in by acquiring all-star and pending UFA Mikko Rantanen from the Avalanche.
We have 13 total games on the National Hockey League (NHL) schedule. There are three afternoon games, so we’ll avoid those games. However, we’ll focus on the evening slate, looking to piece together a couple of strong same-game parlay (SGP) opportunities.
After a late Rangers breakaway bid was broken up in front of the Canes net, Mikko Rantanen carried the puck the other way and played a give-and-go with Jackson Blake as they entered the offensive zone, then set up Svechnikov alone in front for a tap-in dagger with 31 seconds left in the frame.
THROUGH GAMES OF WEDNESDAY, JAN. 29, 2025
After dropping their second straight game, the Rangers have little room for error at this point in the season.
