Republicans have secured their monopoly on power in Donald Trump’s new Washington, retaining their majority in the House of Representatives, CNN projected Wednesday, after picking up seats in California and Arizona and ushering in a dramatic new era of right-wing populist rule.

Republicans will hold a majority of seats in Congress, according to Edison Research, giving the party legislative control to pursue Trump's policies of tax cuts and deregulation.

Republicans have won enough seats to control the U.S. House, completing the party’s sweep into power and securing their hold on government alongside President-elect Trump.
