PHOENIX (AP) — Republican David Schweikert has won an eighth term in an affluent congressional district in the Phoenix area by fending off a challenge from a Democratic former state lawmaker.

Rep. David Schweikert won re-election in Arizona's 1st Congressional District, narrowly defeating Democrat Amish Shah.

Arizona's District 1 represented one of the nation's most competitive races as Democrats hoped to flip a House seat.

U.S. Rep. David Schweikert has won reelection in Arizona’s Scottsdale-area 1st Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race for Schweikert, R-Ariz., Sunday at 8:03 p.m. Schweikert, the embattled representative who has represented Arizona in D.C. since 2011, was widely seen as one of the most vulnerable sitting members of Congress.

Rep. John Ciscomani (R-Ariz.) has won his reelection bid in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, The Hill/Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ) projects. Ciscomani defeated Democratic challenger Kirsten Engel for the seat in the swing district representing the suburbs of Tucson,
