A new tool that assesses the level of danger posed by tsunamis in real-time has been made operational on a global scale.

While the tsunami warning was canceled shortly after evacuations and transportation shut down, San Francisco forecasters said a small wave had been seen off the California coastline.

Unlike the waves we enjoy at the beach, tsunami waves don’t break because they don’t get steep enough. ... but property damage was minimal because there were few cities or towns nearby.

Fortunately, damage was relatively minimal. A tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest, including the San Francisco Bay area, then was canceled a couple of hours later.
