Democrat James Andrew Malone narrowly won a special election for a Pennsylvania state Senate seat in Republican-leaning suburbs and farming communities, scoring an upset for a party roiled by infighting since President Donald Trump’s victory.

Malone’s victory shrinks the GOP advantage in the state senate to 27-23. In a separate election outside Pittsburgh, the Democratic candidate ran well ahead of former Vice President Kamala Harris’ margins in a Democratic seat to maintain the party’s narrow 102-101 advantage in Pennsylvania’s state House.

Democrats keep majority control of the Pa. House by one seat while a Democrat won a state Senate race in a heavily Republican area in special elections Tuesday.
