CEO Pat Gelsinger announced his retirement on Monday. Reports indicate the Intel chief was forced out by Intel’s board, which had grown frustrated with Gelsinger’s turnaround progress.

Gelsinger inherited a mess and it shows in the chart below comparing Intel’s stock performance with some of its major competitors. On Feb. 18, the day after its investor meeting, the stock was off.

That’s when Intel called Pat Gelsinger, who had been at the company for 30 years before stepping away in 2009. He later became president of cloud computing software giant VMware.
