This volume tells the story of the modern discovery of the Harappan Civilization, starting in the early 19th century, when the city of Harappa was first visited by antiquarians. The author, the late Gregory Possehl, was one of the world's leading experts on the ancient Indus Valley.

Understanding the interplay between subsistence strategies and settlement patterns is fundamental for elucidation of past economical and cultural changes.

The paper is an exploration of culture change. It proposes that the Harappan Civilization arose rapidly out of the four regional Early Harappan "cultures." The Transitional Period between the Early Harappan and Mature Harappan is thought to be 150 to 200 years, as is known from radiocarbon dates.
