Still one of Vienna’s landmarks, it glorifies Maria Theresa, who sits enthroned, high and mighty above her advisors and generals. The monument depicts Maria Theresa in her best-known aspects, as a mother figure and as an enlightened yet absolutist reformer.

The over 19 m high and approx. 44 tons heavy monument pictures the empress Maria Theresa in a 6 m large bronze statue. She greets the people with her right hand and in the left hand she holds a document roll of the -Pragmatische Sanktion- and a scepter.

Carl Hasenauer designed the monument that shows Maria Theresa on a throne, surrounded by her most important political and military advisers. Kaspar von Zumbusch made all the bronzes, including the four equestrian statues of her field marshals.

The Maria-Theresien-Denkmal is an enormous monument commemorating Empress Maria Theresa who reigned over Austria from 1740 until her death in 1780.
