Masks is one of my favourite games. It is excellent superhero RPG, with one major caveat: it is specifically about teenage superheroes, and themes of teenage angst and identity. It can’t do other kinds of superhero stories, but what it does do, it does extremely well.

Mar 15, 2012 · Champions is a decent Superhero RPG but has a MASSIVE learning curve for building characters. This certainly can be true, with things like power pools, elemental control, etc. It's probably easier to skip some of that stuff for the first few characters you make. You can also learn a lot by looking at other people's character designs.

Mar 11, 2022 · Sentinel Comics RPG is rules-lite in all the ways that count – easy to run, no complex rules for powers, streamlined mechanics for specific superhero tropes (like differentiating between minions and "real" villains so you can focus), etc. It's got a great velocity to it, and it handles those "weird" cases of superhero powers without any problem.

Feb 6, 2022 · Mutants and Masterminds is a good generic superhero game, with a d20 based system that people with a background in D&D will be able to easily pick up. You definitely need to spend a lot more time at character creation, to pick the right powers and which abilities you're going to use, but it is very good for a large variety of superhero stories.

This isn't a rec but as a fun fact, Superhero: 2044, the very first professionally-produced superhero RPG (even predating Champions), had inherent support for solo play, implicit in its first printing because of its Patrol mechanic and made more explicit in its second printing with the addition of a section on solo play.
