The Kennedy Center Honors started in 1978. The first honorees were Marian Anderson, Fred Astaire, George Balanchine, Richard Rodgers, and Arthur Rubinstein. This year’s honorees have no representation in jazz, classical music, or ballet for the first time in history, as far as I can tell.
